Bredasdorp - 77 km from Gansbaai via Elim
Bredasdorp the agricultural hub of the Southern Overberg is still clearly within a humans scale, it is more spread-out than the other towns in the Agulhas Plains. Bredasdorp is on the 5-way crosspoint between the Danger Point Peninsula, Caledon, Swellendam, Arniston and Cape Agulhas.
Although Bredasdorp is quite a bit inland, it houses the shipwreck museum. With over 140 shipwrecks on the coast between Danger Point Peninsula and Cape Infanta, this museum does not have a lack of inspiration.
Around Bredasdorp the original vegetation of the land starts to change from fynbos, typical to the danger Point Peninsula area to the so-called "Renoster-fynbos" and "Renoster-grassland". These vegetation types are under heavy threat of agriculture and only a few pockets remain. The Agulhas Biodiversity Initiative has launched some drastic actions to save these remaining bits. Driving between Bredasdorp and Swellendam, one can see pockets of this vegetation between wheatfields. Especially in winter, the colours of the flowering Aloes and Mesembs are spectacular.
One one of the farms outside of town grows the largest milkwood of South Africa, a national monument.
